WE DISCOVER A RAILROAD
Rabi digs
The dog, a good find
Is patient with kids
But he digs
Got chipmunks, moles?
He’ll enlarge the holes
Got soft dirt?
Watch him flail
Today he uncovered
A nail
Giant, covered in rust
Old
It excited the imaginations of two
Hannah and Olivia, who
Retrieved then took to school
Rabi’s find
For me, old western movies came to mind
Images of hammers spiking in . . .
Railroad beds
Our East Lansing subdivision, once a farm,
Before that, a wilderness
Loggers moving trees
Of course
The iron horse
We Googled hard
Studied maps, dates
Names and facts
But uncovered nothing to implicate
Our back yard
Was it just a farmer’s spike
So big, rusty and old?
A railroad story is better told
But wait . . .
How about one of those old plank roads?
