LITTLE WHITE LIES

LITTLE WHITE LIES

My heart plugs along
Like the rest of us schmoes
One bump at a time

Unnoticed

Ignored  at the gym
Too much heat in the sauna
Rich foods and strong booze

Can you blame its quest for attention?

    Let it all hang out!
Dance the twist in my chest!

But it’s all just display

A fib if you will

Its effects give it away
An organ not on top of its job

I struggle
While it shirks
Twenty percent of its work

Its reward —
Pushy chemistry
And the threat of  electricity

Would that my heart could discover
The upside to being ignored
And the futility of atrial outrage

Maybe if I faced up
To the truth of my age
